Harvested
by Trailer Suction Dredger in the Falmouth Estuary, Cornwall, U.K.
Description.
This cold water coral, Lithothamnium calcareum,
is to be found where the Gulf stream touches the shores of the United
Kingdom. The Falmouth Estuary (Special Area of Conservation) and costal
waters provide vast banks of this coral, known locally as Maerl.
|
|
Some of these banks have living Maerl
and are untouched, whilst the other areas of dead Maerl,
in varying depths of water up to 80 feet are harvested by dredgers
for use in agriculture. The dredgers are licensed and strictly regulated
by local commissioners. (This is an example of where local industry
and conservation work well together.)
Maerl has exceptional natural properties, brought about by
the absorbtion of elements and minerals in solution in sea water,
into its coral strands.
(Maerl is reputed to have been harvested for agriculture
and medicines locally from medieval times) |
Analysis.
Of the 70 plus elements in solution in
sea water, 30 plus trace elements can be found in Maerl. Let's
see an average of some of them:

All the above trace elements and minerals
help biological action to enrich the soil, releasing natural elements,
encouraging worm activity, and working with other organic fertilisers
such as farm yard manure and slurry for greater fertility.
Grassland: Maerl creates strong
roots and nutricious grass with improved protein content and palatability.
Less rumen acidity in cows, an increased milk yield, and generally healthier
stock. Sheep: Farmers report that sheep graze the rough where Maerl
has been sown in preference to regular pasture where it has not, also
orf and clubfoot have disappeared.
Root Crops: Maerl gives a higher yield for all root crops: Sugar
beet, mangolds, turnips, swedes, parsnips, carrots and potatoes, which
grow a firm potatoe of regular size with a clear, unblotched skin, as
required for sale to supermarkets and crisp manufacturers.

winter migration on the 18th April 2004, after a short rest and
noisy inspection, began to rebuild their nests. |
